I love to see God references in the movies. When you are looking, you see many “Jesus moments.” In many cases I bet the writers and producers didn’t recognize or intend for the Jesus implications but God finds a way. Sometimes it is very obvious like a direct reference to prayer or angels or miracles or something like that. Other times it is more subtle like feelings or pictures or memories. The ones I really like are the references that are over-the-top amazing but most people watching the movie wouldn’t get it. Still God can use that media for His purposes. They may not see it in the natural but God is still speaking.
I looked up some interviews with Spielberg and can’t say if he is or isn’t a follower of Jesus. I know He comes from a Jewish family and that is about it. It seems to me however that He has a hunger for the things of God and the supernatural. How about “Close Encounters of the Third Kind?” In this movie you may remember, the main characters have an encounter. After the encounter they have images of Devil’s tower in Wyoming. With much effort some people made it to the mountain but the authorities are ready to helo them away. There is a comment by one of the government scientists. He asks “how many had an encounter and how many saw images? Of all those thousands or more, how many connected the dots? How many had the resources to make the trip? And of all those that had an encounter only these ten made it this far and we are going to send them away?” In the end of the movie out of all those that had an encounter only Richard Dreyfus enters the ship.
Can you see Jesus having a similar discussion with God and the Holy Spirit? I can hear the pain in His voice about all those He has called, touched, wooed and still so many don’t come.
How about another from Mr Spielberg, ET. A visitor from another world gets left behind. He has childlike faith, enjoys the simple joy of the moment and trusts everyone. He just wants to get home. He is so desperate for a conversation with his family he builds a communication device out of kids toys and random appliances. He makes a phone. In the end this childlike “alien and stranger in this world” actually has amazing power to do stuff like bring healing. Is it just me or is there something very familiar here?
Here is a verse you may have “heard”:
John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me (KJV)
The Greek word for “voice” is “PHONE.” Yep that’s right, phone. Of course it is pronounced differently but isn’t that amazing? The Greek word phone can be translated as:
1. a sound, a tone
a. of inanimate things, as musical instruments
2. a voice
a. of the sound of uttered words
a. of a language, tongue
There’s more. The word “know” is ginṓskō which is to know deeply or intimately like a husband and wife. The word “follow” is from two words. The first word is keleuthos which is a road. The second word is ALPHA as in “I am the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end.” JESUS! So the word “follow” is to travel the road with Jesus as companions. So if you put it together a very loose Lance Literal Translation (vl-LLT) it would be:
John 10:27 I know intimately the ones that walk with me. They know my ring tone and always answer when I call. (vl-LLT)
OK, maybe that is a stretch but you get the idea. We are like ET here in this world. We should be living with childlike faith in the joy of the Lord. We should be bringing the good news and blessings with wonder. We should be like Richard Dreyfus doing anything we can to get to the place of God and enter at all costs, total surrender. We should be listening to His voice and pondering His images and dreams and visions. We should be desperately seeking to know what our Abba has to say. Jesus did nothing unless He saw His Father doing it. Jesus said only what His Father told Him to say. His words were a product of His relationship. How could we be any different? We spend time making calls to home (heaven) and all the while He is calling us. Do we answer or do we fear? The religious will tell you that it doesn’t work that way any more. I say read John 10:27 again. As a matter if fact check it out in context:
John 10:22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “ I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father ‘s name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’ s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” (ESVST)
And remember this passage:
Mat 7:21 “ Not everyone who says to me, ‘ Lord, Lord, ’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘ Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name? ’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness. ’ (ESVST)
To do the will if the Father we have to hear what He is saying not just what He said. If Abraham would have followed through on what God said instead of what He was saying there would be no Isaac. Something to think about.
Pick up the phone. Call home. Listen for what He says. Don’t give up. God desperately wants to have a conversation with you and you don’t need a degree in child-toy spare-part radio construction or a gas mask to climb a mountain. Just know it is His desire and believe in who He is. He Is love. He loves you. He can’t wait to talk to you. When you know that, trust Him and just believe, even the movies will point to the obvious.
Wait I have a call I need to take
